Imaging crustal structures through a passive seismic imaging approach in a mining area in Saxony, Germany

Abstract. We have used several flooding-induced microseismic events that occurred in an abandoned mining area to image geological structures close the hypocentres vicinity of mine. The been located using a migration-based localization approach. recorded full waveforms these localized and processed passive source data as if they resulted from active sources at known hypocentre location origin time defined by applied imaging was then performed focusing 3D prestack depth migration approach for secondary P-wave arrivals. needed velocity model taken recent (controlled-source) seismic survey area. observed clear pronounced reflectors our obtained cube, some them related major fault zone correlating well with information nearby activities. compared results cube directly found new were not yet, probably because their steep dips which had illuminated. respect illumination angles those proved be favourable case, complements elegant way, thereby revealing cannot imaged otherwise surface configurations alone.
